It’s officially considered fall in Florida, and that means I can finally break out my stash of dark lipstick colors. I’ve been waiting for months to start publicly reflecting my inner goth girl, who has been dying to say bye-bye to my pretty pink pout and Hello to vampy vixen lips.
Dark lipstick colors are super trendy for the fall and are a fun way to add a punk-rock vibe to your look, which pairs perfectly with the 90’s grunge trend that is taking over fashionable closets this season. But, if you are not trying to relive the 90’s, you can stick enjoy dark lips and reflect your inner glam girl.
While dark lips are not for the faint of hearts, you can make dark lips work for you if you follow a few tips!
How To Wear Dark Lipstick:
Prep your pucker- Moisturize your lips with a lip balm. I personally recommend using the Vaseline Lip Therapy everyday to keep lips healthy and smooth. It’s also a good idea to exfoliate your lips before you apply a dark cooler, especially if your lips are peeling. You’ll always want to apply a lip primer or base to your lips, such as the OCC Clear Lip Tar, which will help to keep your lipstick from bleeding.
Pick your perfect match- Like all things in life, you have to pick a lip color that is right for you. For starters, the color needs to compliment your skin tone. If you have fair skin, dark red and berry tones will look best for you (try MAC- Russian Red) . If you have a medium skin tone, try a maroon shade (try OCC- Black Metal Dahlia) and if you have a dark skin tone try a deep brown (try OCC-Sybil). I also recommend sticking to matte or satin finishes for dark lips, they tend to look stay longer and look better.
Make it last– Priming your lips before starting and adding a base, such as filling your lips with lip liner, will help to keep your color in place. Keeping lipstick off your teeth can also be a challenge. We’ve all had lipstick stuck to our teeth at one point or another. Avoid the beauty bust by using a simple trick and your thumb. Here’s how: Put your finger into your mouth, form an “O” around your finger and slide your finger out slowly. This removes any excess lipstick and the chances of it ending up on your lips.
Keep it classy- Dark lips are a statement on their own. Refrain from over doing the rest of your makeup and keep the rest of your look clean and simple. Define your eyes by applying tons of mascara (OK, maybe not tons, but put some on), lining your eyes and defining your brows. You can fill your brows (need help? Check out my brow filling tutorial) or just make sure they are groomed.
Confidence is key- I have said it before and I will say it again– CONFIDENCE IS KEY! You can wear any look your little heart desires as long as you feel great!
