Red lipstick is a timeless lip color and there is a reason that women have been swooning over this color for decades. To put it simple terms, it basically rocks!
According to color psychology, the color red will give you a quick confidence boost. By wearing a red lipstick, you will instantly brighten your face and are you ready for the added bonus? Red lipstick can also make your teeth appear whiter if you pick the right shade. Now that’s something every woman can fall in love with!
With so much to like about red lipstick, I always find it interesting when women tell me they can’t wear a red lip. It mind boggles me because I believe anyone can pull off red lipstick, but I also know that there are a few things that make women skeptical of the color.
Most common reasons most women are hesitant to wear a red lip:
- Haven’t found the right shade
- Don’t know how to apply it
- Don’t know how to do the rest of their makeup when wearing red lipstick
And then that’s where I come in. As an official red lipstick match maker, I enjoying helping women rock a red lip! Hey, what can I say? I’m basically the Cupid of red lipstick love!
How to find the right red lipstick
All reds are not created equally, and with that being said, a shade that looks great on your bestie will not necessarily look good on you. It’s important to select a shade that compliments your complexion, eye color and hair color. The best way to do this is experiment with various intensities of red.
As a certified lipstick lover, I’m always shopping for new lipsticks and the last time I was at Walmart I couldn’t help but notice the Maybelline Color Sensational LipColors. The collection includes brilliant shades that are rick, stunning and perfect for Valentine’s Day!
Now, let me help you find the right color for you!
If you have a…
Fair Complexion- If you have fair skin with pink undertones, opt for cherry red. If you have yellow undertones, opt for a wine shade instead.
Bonus: The blue undertones in these colors will instantly make your teeth appear whiter!
Color to consider: Maybelline Siren In Scarlet (#690)
Medium Complexion- If you have a medium complexion with berry reds, and if you have a bit of a golden tan opt for something with a orange tinge. Just keep in mind, the warmth in the orange may make your teeth a appear yellow, so make sure to use a whitening tooth paste in advance.
Color to consider: Maybelline Rich Ruby (#691)
Deep Complexion- Deep complexions look best in deep reds like plum. Warm deep complexions also look great with a burnt orange shade of red.
Color to consider: Maybelline Burgundy Blush (#696)
Red Lipstick Tip: You know I don’t believe in rules, so I don’t feel like you HAVE to wear one of the shades above. These are just the colors that best suit each skin tone, but I say if you like a color, try it on! The worst that can happen is that you end up wiping it off!
How to Apply Red Lipstick Lip a Pro
Some women think that red lipstick is harder to apply than other colors and that’s not true. You just have to learn the proper way to apply lipstick and I promise this technique works on any color, even RED!
- Exfoliate your lips. Soft, smooth lips are essential for a red pout.
- Before applying the color, moisturize your lips. Make sure to do this in advance so that the color adheres to your lips, especially when using a matte formula.
How to wear makeup with red lips
Now that you’re a total pro at rocking a red lip, it’s time to talk about how to makeup the rest of your face. Since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, I’m all about creating a sultry makeup look that is perfect for a fabulous date night with my boyfriend.
To get a V-Day ready look, I used the Maybelline Rock The Nudes Palette to create a soft smoky eye look. This palette includes 12 edgy eye shadows, from maddening matte black to knock out navy, to bring out your inner rockstar!
To create the look, I used the lightest shade in the palette (#1) all over my eye lid, then I applied the taupe shade (#2) from the base of my lashes to my crease. Next, I contoured my eye by applying ash brown (#3) in my crease. To add a bit a of glam, I went back and applied the shimmery mauve (#4) on my lid, Lastly, I highlighted my brow bone with the shimmery cream shade (#5).
Then I finished my eye look by creating a cat eye with my Maybelline Eye Studio Master Graphic Liquid Marker Eyeliner. Finally to make my eyes pop, I applied two coats of my Maybelline Falsies Push Up Drama Mascara. This mascara has a new creamy plumping formula, designed to deliver instant volume, while holding lift in place.
For my face, I first started by applying my Maybelline Dream Velvet™ foundation. Then, I used my Maybelline Master Contour palette to sculpt my face.
