Makeup Artist Interview: James Vincent
I recently had the opportunity to interview one of my favorite artists in the makeup industry, James Vincent, who has worked his brushes in all facets of makeup. He has worked on the hottest runways shows, television shows such as American Idol and with celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Reese Witherspoon. He has also worked as a trainer and in product development for brands such as Makeup Forever, MAC and Stila.
In addition to being an incredible artist, he is also the Director of Artist Relations and Education at The Makeup Show. He works with artists of all levels and produces the education schedule for The Makeup Show, along with a team of elite artists.
It’s not often that I have the chance to pick the brain of a makeup mastermind, such as James Vincent, and I was thrilled when The Makeup Show gave me the opportunity to do so! I put together a list of questions that I think all my readers, from makeup enthusiasts to professional makeup artists will enjoy!
1. As an artist, What inspires you to create?
Everything around me and the women in my life. I am as inspired by a strong woman, as I am by a sunset or a gorgeous cool girl I see on the street or a trip to a gallery. You have to be open to your surroundings and you will never be without ideas.
2. What are a few of your favorite makeup trends for the fall and what products can be found at TMS to create the fall trends trends?
I love a black line with a deep burgundy lip and love the combination of Make Up For Ever Aqua Black with OCC Lip Tar in Black Dahlia. I showed this at multiple shows for the season and think it is a look an unlimited number of women can wear.
I love a classic red lip with a liberal amount of mascara. Try some of the beautiful reds from Inglot Cosmetics or NARS for a classic red that still feels current. Put that together with a blue or green mascara and the impact is amazing. It will have people stopping in their tracks.
I can not get enough of the bronze goddess look for autumn. NARS The Multiple, paired with Stila Convertible Colors and Keyvyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder are perfect to give any skin tone the look like that have just been in the sun.
Bright and bold liner looks are everywhere. Look to Inglot and Make Up For Ever for beautiful cream and liquid liners and NARS new eye Paint is perfect and waterproof for a long day at work and night on the town.
Metallic Smoky Eyes are everywhere. I love Mehrons intense eye shadows for looks that are fashion forward and super wearable.
Bold brows are everything. Look to Senna Cosmetics for beautiful brow gels and pencils, Temptus Airbrow system is amazing for giving any woman the power to put across a professional looking flawlessly polished and perfect eyebrow.
3. OCC Lip Tars have been raved about in the cosmetics industry, what are other ways that lip tars can be used, asides as just a lip color?
I love Lip Tar as blush. It is the perfect formula. Pairing it on the cheek with a bold lip adds balance and the monochromatic color look wakes it much easier for women who are afraid of bold lips to wear it.
4. In your opinion, what are 5 products that a makeup artist must carry in his/her kit?
5 is tough for me. Great skin care is essential. I love Embryolisse Lait Creme. It’s the cult product every makeup artist carries.
I love cream foundations like Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer and Graftobian HD. They allow endless coverage and customization from sheer to full and always last and look flawless in photos. I can do anything with it.
Make Up For Ever really has brilliant colors and textures. Right now I love Aqua Creams and Aqua Shadows, which are waterproof product perfect for durability and steamy humid summers.
I love blush right now too. NARS multiples are always in my kit, they give a perfect glow and warmth every time. Stila Covertible Color are some of my favorite products for flushing the skin.
Lip Tars. They really do allow for me to accomplish any look I imagine and take it any where I want from natural to film noir from every day to avant garde. It is a must have tool for me.
