I covered the red lip trend last spring, and here I am again a year later still talking about it. Truth be told, red lips are not a trend, they are a makeup institution. Crimson lips root back to ancient Egypt and were called “The kiss of death” due to the harmful pigments that created the shade (some women even died). Thank goodness that the red formula has been refined and is 100% safe to wear, yet for some reason many women still fear the red lipstick tube.
Some of the most common misconceptions I have heard:
” I could never wear red lipstick.”
” I don’t know what color is right for me.”
” Red makes my teeth look yellow.”
” I’m too old for red lipstick.”
” I’m going to look like I walked out of an 80’s music video.”
I’m here to tell you that you CAN wear red lipstick and NOT look like Madonna in her “Like A Virgin” music video, although I thinks she looks totally fierce. I covered the basics on how to wear red last season and some of my favorite shades (You can check it out here), but here are my 3 essentials for wearing a red lip.
1. Know what red works for you- All reds are not created equally, and with that being said, a shade that looks great on your bestie will not necessarily look good on you. It’s important to select a shade that compliments your complexion, eye color and hair color. The best way to do this is experiment with various intensities of red. I recommend visiting your favorite makeup couter or store and try on as many colors as you can. It’s ok to ask for help, try on shades and ask your Instagram followers which color they prefer. Once you get an idea what shades look best on you, red lipstick will become an easy breezy buying experience.
2. Like all things in life, remember to BALANCE- Red lipstick will make your lips and face stand out. If done properly, the lip should bring attention to all of your beautiful features. Make sure to keep your eyes simple, but never bare. Always apply mascara, a little liner and even some neutral shadow shades. Stay away from smokey eyes and red lips, unless you want to look like you walked the set of “Burlesque.”
3. Confidence- If you are going to wear a bold red lip, make sure you own it. Remember, if you carry yourself like a goddess, the rest of the world will treat you like one!
