I always grew up believing that stripes made you look fat and that only slender women could wear them. I followed that rule for a long time, mostly when I was much thinner than I am now (funny how that works, huh?). Thank goodness that I stopped following silly fashion rules and started to dress by own rules, which is practically none!
Although I consider myself an unruly fashionista, I’ve never been one for stripes, much less for colorful stripes. I typically do black and white, so when Shenna suggested that we do colored stripes for our first challenge, I already felt out of my element. I sifted through my closet and I as I expected, I only found black and white stripes. Before running out to buy something, I decided to check one of my storage bins because I knew I had to have something colorful in my fashion stash.
That’s when I pulled out this knitted stripe top for way back in the day when I worked at French Connection in New York. Six years ago I would have styled this piece in a chic manner, which would have included black skinny jeans and cut-out pumps. Since the top doesn’t fit the way it used to, I actually considered sending it off to live a new life at Goodwill. I’m so glad I didn’t do that!
I feel in love with this top again, and the challenge helped me think outside of the box on how to style this piece. I reinvented this top into a street-chic style outfit, that merges edgy with comfort. It’s the perfect outfit for strolling in the city (in this case Delay Beach) on a beautiful South Florida day!

I love the colorful stripes on you!! See, this is the exact reason why I don’t want to give away pieces I haven’t worn – what if the style comes back or I need it for something? Great outfit!

Thanks Dana! I tend to save pieces I love, even if they aren’t trending. Since everything comes back around, you never know when you can pop a piece back into your wardrobe!
