I’m a colorful gal that loves two things in life: bright colors and clothes. Lucky for me, this summer those two things are coming together with the arrival of the rainbow fashion trend for 2018. This season, it’s all about letting your inner Rainbow Brite shine with technicolor hues from head-to-toe. While this trend feels really natural to me, I know it can be a bit intimidating for some people. That’s why I’m sharing some styling tips with you today to help you slay the rainbow fashion trend this summer like a total colorful pro.
How to Slay the Rainbow Fashion Trend this Summer
Add a new color to your wardrobe- So many people are married to a certain color. I think it’s easy to say that “black look good on me” and just settle for a color. This season, I encourage you to challenge yourself to try adding a new color to your wardrobe. Pick a color that you like, and then work it into your existing clothing collection. If this is a leap for you, start by taking baby steps. For example, if you’d like to add pink to your wardrobe, start with a dusty rose, instead of hot pink. Pop color with accessories- For some colorful clothes is just too much, and that’s totally ok. It’s your body and you can choose to wear whatever makes your heart happy. But if you’re craving a dose of color, consider adding some pops of color with accessories. A handbag or shoes is an easy way to brighten up your look. If you prefer to stick to small hints of color, try adding a pair of colorful earrings or a neck scarf to your look.
Monochromatic color is chic- To embrace the rainbow fashion trend, you don’t have to wear different colors from head-to-toe. In fact, a colorful monochromatic look can be ever so posh. This summer, experiment with an ensemble of all red, orange, or yellow.
Mix colorful prints- Maybe you’re already a color aficionada or maybe you’re feeling really comfortable with splashing your wardrobe with color. If this is you, now is a good time to step up your game by mixing bright prints. Think polka dots and stripes, or florals and gingham. Remember, mixing prints is also about experimenting and owning your creations. I constantly challenge myself to play with mixing colors. In fact, a few summers ago I teamed up with a few other West Coast style bloggers to take on a mixed prints style challenge. This summer I picked up a rainbow-striped blouse from the Who What Wear collection from Target, and I’m taking on the challenge of styling it for summer.
Rainbow stripes are the unofficial print of summer- Speaking of rainbow, rainbow stripes are sizzling for summer. Look around because you’re bound to see rainbow stripes everywhere. I’ve actually spotted a ton of affordable rainbow striped pieces at Target. My skirt from this outfit is from Target (and it’s currently on sale for under 20!), along with my new rainbow striped blouse.

The timing for this trend to kick-off couldn’t be better, because June is also Pride Month. The rainbow fashion trend is the perfect fit for pride month because you can coordinate your look for any Pride celebration. From parades to parties, enjoy the explosion of color all around. This is the perfect time to show your support for the LGBTQ+ community through fashion, but if you really want to support the cause, consider taking the time to get involved with your local LGBTQ+ community through activism in whatever way feels right for you. Mashable actual put together a guide with 10 meaningful ways to celebrate Pride month, which I found really useful.
