How to Pack a Travel Makeup Bag
We’re in the midst of spring break season, with summer quickly approaching– it’s time to start planning for upcoming travel adventures!
But planning the trip is only half the journey; the real challenge is packing all of your favorite beauty items into one easy to carry case. Here are a few tips to help you get your beauty packing on the road!
How to pack a travel makeup bag:
1. K.I.S.S (Keep it simple sweetheart)- I know some say to go “au naturel” during a vay-cay, but that’s so not my style. However, I do suggest simplifying your look to spend less time in front of the mirror and more time enjoying your trip. Pack items that are multi-use, like a blush that can be used as an eye color and lip color (check it out here). Another good idea is to bring an eye shadow palette, instead of multiple single shadows. A palette, like the Lorac Pro Palette, can save on space and easily help you transform your day look into a night look. Also, keep your destination in mind when you are packing. You’re probably not going to wear green glitter eye shadow on a skiing trip, so only pack the essentials.
2. Lighten up! – An easy way to bring all of your makeup mush-haves, without the extra weight, is to repackage full-sized products in to travel-friendly containers. You can pick up sample-sized containers at your local makeup counter or buy small containers from the craft store. You can even pick up travel-sized products or roll-on fragrance that are fuss-free for traveling.
TIP: Pre-soak cotton swabs with makeup remover and allow them to dry. Once they are completely dried, place them in a plastic baggie in your makeup bag. Lightly moisten them and you now have travel-friendly makeup remover!
3. Give your brushes some TLC- Good brushes are not cheap, and jamming them into tiny makeup pouches is the perfect recipe for disaster. They will easily get crushed and dirty if you do not store them properly. Pick up a brush roll (2611 makes beautiful custom brush rolls) or a makeup bag with a built in brush holder (like my Mary Kay travel makeup bag). Giving your brushes some personal space will make them preform better and last longer. If you’re a globetrotter, consider getting to-go brushes, so you always have your travel brushes ready-to-go.
4. Carry on! – When flying, always carry on your makeup bag. You can keep your products safe by your side and readily available for early morning airport touch-ups. Regardless of your mode of transportation, I suggest keeping your makeup bag close by, so that you don’t have to dig through your suitcase in a random gas station parking lot.
5. Know the rules of the road air– You probably know this, but just in case. TSA has special rules and regulations of what you can carry on in your bag, including your makeup bag. I have highlighted the key points for you in the image above, but check the TSA website to make sure you got the most recent facts before you travel.
