Confession: I used to hate laundry day. I would do anything to put it off until the last minute, but after having a few “I have nothing clean to wear” fashion emergencies, I knew it was time to make a change. I started off by shifting my perception about laundry day by adapting a Sunday spa day theme, because who doesn’t love to be pampered? Instead of just filling my day with sorting and folding, I started to include things that I enjoy. Things like blasting my favorite music, caring for my hair, and even a mini facial session. Now my Sundays are about giving myself and my clothes a little TLC and I actually look forward to them. Plus, I’ve even learned the best ways to keeping your clothes looking their best and I’m sharing some tips with you today.
First, let’s talk what makes my Sunday a spa day and how you can incorporate some of these things into your routine.
How to Pamper Yourself from Head to Clothes
One of the ways that I take care of myself and my clothes is by using products that are sulfate-free. I first discover sulfate-free products from my hairstylist, who suggested that I make the switch to help keep my color-treated hair healthy while maintaining my color.
I’m currently using the AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner to kick off the haircare portion of my Sunday spa day. AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner contains naturally derived cleansers and a sulfate free formula to gently cleanse your hair and scalp. Since it’s important to me to know what I’m putting on my hair and on my body, I chose the AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner to be a part of my haircare regimen. I’ve had some scalp sensitivity in the past and I like that the clinically proven mild formula is friendly on my sensitive skin and scalp, while gently renewing my hair to keep it in a balanced state everyday. It’s the right fit for my lifestyle, budget, and my Sunday spa day routine.
By the way, I found AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner at my local Walmart and you can to. Use this coupon to save $1.00 off one (1) AVEENO® product (excludes trial and travel sizes).
After I finish washing my hair, I allow it to air dry to reduce the amount of heat that I expose my strands to. This takes a while so it gives me time to start on the laundry portion of my routine, while a pop on a brightening mask on my face. I’m all about multitasking, so I work on my laundry at the same time.
I love my clothes and I like to keep my clothing looking new. Faded or dingy clothing is not an option for me, so I developed a routine to keep my clothing colorful, while lasting season after season.
How to to pamper your clothing to keep it from fading
Sort your clothing– Start off by making a few piles of clothing:
- Whites
- Colors
- Darks
- Delicates
This is more work than just dumping anything into the washer, but it’s a big part of the secret to keep clothing looking like new. While you are making your piles, make sure to remove any towels from your clothing piles. Washing clothes with towels can damage your clothing and cause them to get covered in fuzzies. Trust me, if you ever make this mistake, you will never do it again! You also want to turn your clothing inside out to protect the outer fabric while it washes.
Pick the proper settings- All laundry loads shouldn’t be treated the same, that’s why it’s important to not use the same setting on all of your clothes. Always select a water setting that’s appropriate for the amount of clothing you are putting in the load. Never over stuff the load because this will prevent your clothes from properly washing. It can cause your clothes to get damaged too.
When it comes to picking the water temperature for your load, here’s what you need to know:
- Whites- Use hot water
- Colors- Lukewarm or cold water
- Darks- cold water (hot water can cause bleeding and it will make your colors fade faster)
What about the delicates?- These pieces (think lingerie, clothing with lace, and athletic wear) should be treated with extra care. You can place them in laundry bag and set your washer to the gentle cycle if you have this setting. If not, I recommend washing them by hand and hanging them to dry.
Use sulfate-free detergent- Just how the AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner keep my hair clean and lustrous, the NEW sulfate free all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® delivers a powerful clean without harshness to my clothing. I found this laundry detergent at Walmart and it caught my attention because it’s one of the few laundry detergents that lists the products on the back of the bottle. The sulfate-free formula is able to thoroughly clean clothing and lift stubborn stains, even on the toughest stains (think grass and dirt). On your next shopping trip you can pick up all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® from Walmart and use this digital coupon, good for $.50 off one (1) all® product while supplies last. You can find it on the top shelf of the laundry aisle.
To hang or to dry? That is the question– When I wash my hair with AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner, I avoid using heat on my hair afterward and allow my hair to air dry. I try to do the same with my laundry. I hang my delicates and black clothing to dry on a hanger, while the rest of my clothing goes in the dryer. When using a dryer, I use just enough to dry my clothing, without allowing my clothing to take excessive heat. Remember, heat leads to color fading and we don’t want that!
Trade in your iron for a steamer- My steamer is my best friend. I traded my iron for it years ago and never looked back. I find that steaming clothing is less harsh that ironing on fabric and helps to maintain the longevity of my clothing.
