Fact: Midi skirts are officially my favorite wardrobe item of the moment. Ever since I got my first midi skirt last year, I just can’t stop eyeing them and adding them to my cart every time I go shopping. The reason I love the midi is simple: it adds a dash of panache to any outfit.
Midi skirts are having a major moment right now, but they are nothing new in the world of fashion. These skirts, which can range in length from below the knee to mid-calf, have actually been around since the 1940’s and were styled in an elegant manner at the time. The skirts went on a hiatus for some time and have returned in a mod new manner, with fun prints and textures to chose from. The best part is that they can work for any body type when styled properly.
How to Style a Midi Skirt
When I first bought my first mint midi skirt from ASOS, I had no idea how to style it. I’m only 5’2, so the skirt looked super long on me because what can I say, I’m vertically challenged. I did a lot of experimenting and came up with a few tips on how to style a midi skirt for beginners.
Alter your midi to fit your frame- In order to make a midi skirt that is mass-produced for the millions your own, you must get it altered to fit you. Sometimes you will get lucky and it will fit just right, but I believe in getting clothes altered for a customized fit. The midi skirt should fall just below the knee, up to the mid calf. Chose your length based on your height. If you are petite, you will probably want to your skirt hemmed just below the knee, so that it doesn’t make you look shorter. For taller gals, you can wear the skirt at whichever length you prefer, but mid-calf looks best in my opinion.
Let the top set the tone- When it comes to top options, the possibilities are endless. From a cool girl crop tops, to preppy sweaters, and even graphic tees, midi skirts can be paired with almost any top. I feel like the top creates the overall feel of your outfit when wearing a midi skirt, so pick a top that fits the occasion. Recently, I paired my blush midi skirt with a chambray shirt for a seaside brunch with friends and it was perfect for the occasion.
Pick the right shoe- I feel that a midi skirt is a great way to show off a good pair of shoes. I like to wear my midis with both heels and flats, but I usually wear heels to make my legs look longer.
