I’m a very artistic person and I have a deep appreciation for color, hence my blog name. When it comes to my personal style, wearing a ton of color hasn’t always been the norm for me. I’ve been through many style phases in the last few years, and my style has evolved to include vibrant color schemes. I love that color and fashion allow me to express my confidence, but I also understand that incorporating color into my wardrobe can be tricky. In fact, I have to admit that sometimes the grayness of Seattle gets me into a dark-clothing rut and I find myself seeking inspiration to brighten up my look. This is why as a creative person, I’m always looking for ways to ignite my creativity and search for inspiration all around me.
Recently, I was running around doing some outfit shopping for the blog, but I was having a hard time putting together the right look. I decided to stop by 7-Eleven to pick up something to drink to hydrate myself. I always like to stop at 7-Eleven because it’s so easy to pop in when I’m on-the-go. The second I went up to the water cooler I was instantly drawn to the unique and inspiring design of LIFEWTR. The bottles all have beautiful designs that ignite my creativity, so naturally, I had to grab one of each. After I got back into my car with the water, I took a moment to drink up and allowed the purified water to refresh my body.
It feels good to drink LIFEWTR because it’s purified and pH balanced, with electrolytes for taste. Between quenching my thirst and the colorful design of the bottles, I felt inspired and the lightbulb turned on for me. I now always keep a bottle of LIFEWTR with me as my fashionable and refreshing accessory to help discover new ideas.
Do you ever find it difficult to figure out how to add color into your wardrobe? I have put together a few styling tips to help you get into the groove of popping color into your look. You’ll be splashing color in your style in no time!
How to Add Color to Your Wardrobe in 7 Simple Steps
Mentally prepare yourself and picture your life in color- Overcoming the fear of color is half of the battle when it comes to adding color into our wardrobe. The concept can feel strange at first, so start by getting your mind right. Ask yourself a few questions to get yourself in the right mindset. A great place to start is with these questions: What’s my favorite color? What color makes me happy? What amount of color would I feel comfortable in?
If color scares you, pick colors that will complement you- Let me start by saying this: don’t let dressing to flatter become your priority. Fashion is too fun for rules. But, if you don’t know where to start, picking colors that will complement your eye color is a good place to get started.
If you have green or hazel eyes…Plum, purple and brick red would complement your eye color.
If you have blue eyes… Coral and orange will make your eyes pop!
If you have gray eyes…Black looks great with gray eyes, but we’re about adding in color around here so consider adding a print to your look!
If you have brown eyes… You’re in luck because practically any color looks good on you! Try colors such as emerald and raspberry.
Trade in dark colors for soft neutrals- Now it’s time to get to work. If you are anything like me, you instantly gravitate toward black clothing. After all, black is the easiest neutral tone that works with anything, right? It’s true, but it’s time to think beyond black. Consider other neutral tones such as brown (it’s an easy move away from black), navy, and olive green. These colors will help to make the transition into a colorful closet much easier. Once you get the hang of that, take it a step further and work with lighter solid colors such as beige, blush, and gray.
Add in a print- Prints can be scary, especially if you are not used to wearing too many colors. A good way to slowly incorporate prints into your wardrobe is by starting with a print that is small and classic. Think stripes or checkered print. If you still feel uneasy, pair the printed piece with other garments that are in the same color family. For example, if you wear a gray and white striped shirt, pair it with gray pants. You get the drift, right?
Add in pops of color- Here’s where things start to get interesting! Poppin’ color is my favorite way to brighten up my look, and I also think it’s one of the most effective ways to get the job done. You can pop in color with a statement color, for example, my poppy colored t-shirt. You can also pop in color through your shoes and accessories, or with a bottle of inspiring LIFEWTR like I did. Experiment with your accessories and remember it’s fashion; it’s supposed to be fun.
Mix Prints- If you’re ready to start taking a walk on the wild side of your wardrobe, then it’s time you start exploring the idea of mixing prints. Even as a self-proclaimed fashionista, this was a hard step for me, but I haven’t looked back since. It takes some practice, so I recommend that you start with baby steps. For example, start by mixing prints that are in the same pattern family. Think a blouse with small polka dots and pants with large dots, or a blouse with horizontal stripes and a skirt with vertical stripes. Once you get into the groove of things, you can start pairing polka dots with stripes, or floral prints and gingham. The possibilities are endless, and I promise you that mixing prints becomes addictive!
Have fun- I believe that living your life colorfully is about having fun. It’s about allowing your inner YOU to shine through your personal style. Take all of the tips and steps above with a grain of salt and color up with colorful looks that feel right for YOU. Learning to dress unapologetically takes time, but you will never look back once you start. At the end of the day, the biggest thing I hope you take away from these tips is that it’s ok to express yourself through color and fashion.

I’m so glad to see someone with such confidence. Mine went out the door a long time ago! I also have a bad issue with no flare with color. My colors consist of tees, jeans and shoes. Most of the time, they don’t flare out. The colors are normally dull. It looks like this is one woman that learned something new! Thank you.
