Every year I look forward to the first day of fall, but this year brings on a whole new level of excitement. Since I recently moved cross-country to Seattle, I finally have a reason to incorporate REAL fall fashions into my closet. You know, the things like jackets and scarves, which I have been stashing away for years waiting for this day to arrive. After much wait and anticipation, I can officially say that my wardrobe is ready for fall.
Getting my wardrobe and closet for the new season took a little bit of work and money, but I’m so happy with the outcome. To help you make the transition smoother, I’ve rounded up a few tips on how to get your closet ready for fall too!
Fall Fashion: How to Transition Your Closet from Summer to Fall
Closet Edit– At the start of every season, you should always perform a quick closet edit. This is a great way to make room for clothing that is appropriate for the present season, as well as to assess what you need to be adequately prepared for the season.
Start of by sifting through you closet and remove your summer clothing from the mix. It’s ok to leave transition pieces out, such as cold shoulder dresses, but make sure to get things like neon tank tops and flip flops out of the way. You can push them to the back of your closet, or if you are tight on space like I am, consider moving these pieces into bins or vacuum sealed bags.
Pro Tip: During your edit, if you happened to come across clothing that no longer fits your style, make sure to put those in a donation pile.
- Colored Pants
- Denim pants
- Midi skirts
- Long sleeve shirts and sweaters
- Vests
- Jackets
- Booties
- Boots
- Hats
The items on your list will really depend on your climate, so make sure that your list reflects that. If you are missing essentials from the list, make a separate list of items to pick up when you go shopping.
Make a Must-have Trends List– Just like your essentials list, a trends list is a great way to evaluate the seasonal trends that you would like to incorporate into your look for fall.
Each season is filled with must-have pieces and these are a few fall fashion trends that you should consider for autmn/winter 2016:
- Moto jacket
- Bomber Jacket
- Slip Dress (Think 90s here)
- Pleated skirt
- Prints
Pro Tip: Think beyond the basic fall colors and experiment with some of the seasons hottest color, such as Potter’s Clay and warm taupe.
Start Shopping- Obviously this is usually the best part of updating your wardrobe and it’s my favorite step! I can get a little out of hand when it comes to shopping, so I have to set some boundaries. If this sounds like you too, make sure to set a budget for your wardrobe update. One of my favorite places to find budget-friendly options is at Target. Their items are always on trend and I find that they have great prices. You know what that means, more money for more clothing!
Protect Your Fall Wardrobe– Now that you have a well curated fall wardrobe, make sure that you are protecting your fall clothing items to help them last through the season and seasons to come.
While grabbing some trendy fall fashions at Target, I also stocked up on Scotchgard™ Fabric & Upholstery Protector. Not only does this product protect furniture from everyday life, it also protects almost any fabric too. It’s great for keeping fabrics in their best shape by repelling liquids and blocking stains (it actually pushes them away from the fabric fibers). Plus, it’s safe to use on delicate and clean fabrics without changing the look, feel or breath-ability of the fabric.
I like to use Scotchgard™ Fabric Protector on pants, hats, and jackets, but you can even use it on shirts and backpacks. Although I’ve been using this product for years, it’s super important to me this year since the I hear that rainy season in Seattle can be tough on clothing. To make sure my new clothing and accessories are protected for the season, I reapplied the product to my existing wardrobe essentials and will do so again after each cleaning.
In addition to applying the product to my new fall fashion essentials, I also did my annual application on my shoes and hats to keep them protected from the elements. This is a super easy process and totally worth it.
5. Allow the product time to dry between coats.
6. Reapply the product after every cleaning or annually to maintain protection. I do my jackets and coats after I have them cleaned and I do my shoes monthly since they get more wear. Keep in mind, durability of protection varies with wear.

Such fantastic tips, Sahily! And what a fun move it sounds like you just made…I’d love to live somewhere the temperatures actually change (here in Texas, it’s minimal!). Yay for fall clothes!! [client]
