Truth: Mixed prints are not my thing.
When the girls of Unitedly Plus and I decided to do this as a style challenge, I already knew this was going to be a challenge for sure.
It’s not because I don’t like mixed prints, it’s because it’s a styling technique that I’m still learning to master. I’m always in awe when I see someone slayin’ a mixed print look, so naturally I want to be able to get on their level too. You know what they say: practice makes perfect. So for the last two years I’ve been experimenting with mixing prints. In my trials I’ve put together some cute looks and some that I would rather not talk about. There’s definitely been a learning curve, but I’ve picked up a few tricks along the way that you may find helpful if you struggle with mixing prints like I do.
- Start off with monochromatic patterns and prints. For example, try mixing a small polka dot print with a large polka dot print.
- Mix similar color schemes (black and white is always a safe place to start).
- Experiment with mixing textures and shapes.
Once you’ve got the hang on mixing prints, then you can get crazy and even add in a 3rd print. I’m not there yet with my styling skills, but keep a look out because I may surprise you one day!
